Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects Grant Contract Signing Ceremony for the Project for the Construction of School Kitchen to Primary Schools in Mzimba District (10th February 2026)

On Tuesday, 10th February 2026, His Excellency NAITO Yasushi, Ambassador of Japan to Malawi and Mr. Victor Mthulo, Program Manager of Seibo Maria, signed a grant contract amounting up to USD 96,619 (approximately K166 million) for the Project for the Construction of School Kitchen to Primary Schools in Mzimba District provided under the Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects by the Government of Japan. Through this grant, three school kitchens at three primary school will be provided from Japan to improve school attendance and learning outcomes in Mzimba District.
 
During the ceremony, Ambassador NAITO noted that many families in the country struggle to provide for the support and nutrition their children need when going to school. As a result, many students go to class hungry and unable to concentrate and often end up dropping out of school. 
The Ambassador expressed hope that this project will build resilient, inclusive and sustainable societies and serve as a significant step toward the Government of Malawi’s goal of ensuring that every child can complete twelve years of formal education.
 
In concluding his remarks, the Ambassador underscored that the partnership, between Governments of Japan and Malawi, is a testament to our enduring friendship and shared vision for a brighter future for Malawi.
 
The Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects is a Japanese Government grant aid scheme introduced in 1989.The aim of the GGP is to provide financial assistance to non-profit development organization and local government institutions for implementing projects at grassroots level. The GGP funding is a gift from the ordinary Japanese citizen to assist fellow global citizens in need.
