Bilateral Relations

Malawi achieved independence in July 1964, and Japan recognized Malawi’s independence in the same year. Japan and Malawi have maintained friendly and cooperative relations since the establishment of diplomatic relations.

The Embassy of Malawi in Japan was established in 1992, while the Embassy of Japan in Malawi was opened in January 2008. The two countries continue to strengthen their longstanding friendship and cooperation across a wide range of areas.
