Bilateral relations in general Malawi achieved independence in July 1964, and at the same time Japan recognized Malawi. The embassy has concurrent jurisdiction over Malawi. In 1992, the Embassy of Malawi in Japan opened, and in January 2008, the Embassy of Japan in Malawi opened. The two countries maintain good relations.
