Ambassador NAITO Yasushi
It is with profound honour that I have been appointed as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Republic of Malawi. I am excited to serve in the country respectfully referred to as “the Warm Heart of Africa.”
My name is NAITO Yasushi, and I arrived in Lilongwe on 12th January. I am impressed with warm hospitality of the people of Malawi every day since my arrival.
The Japan-Malawi relations is notably blessed with the world’s biggest numbers of dispatched JICA volunteers. Malawi is a country that shares common values and principles such as democracy and the rule of law and is a key partner in the international fora.
In the increasingly challenging and complex international situations, Japan is enhancing its effort to advance free and open international order and is actively collaborating with African friends including Malawi.
Through our 62 years of diplomatic relations, Japan and Malawi have built friendship based on trust and cooperation over the time. I wish to further deepen the friendship and strengthen our bilateral relations to the best of my ability. For instance, I wish to actively support the activities of JICA volunteers so that their interactions with Japanese sincerity throughout Malawi could shine with a warm glow.
The bonds of friendship that have been built by a total of 1958 JOCV volunteers that have been dispatched to Malawi to date with the efforts of Malawian counterparts, and by more than 3000 JICA trainees to Japan are the most important asset of our bilateral relations.
The Passion and positive power of those who bridge the two nations are a driving force of the relations. It is encouraging to see the human-to-human interactions broadening to universities, municipalities and in the area of sports. The Embassy wishes to continue providing its support to such undertakings.
In terms of Official Development Assistance, Japan has made cooperation in constructing international airports, power stations, irrigation systems, teachers training colleges, among others.
Looking forward, the Nacala Corridor initiative which was announced during TICAD 9 last year is an important regional initiative to develop industries and enhance the supply chain. Malawi is an important hub of the corridor. It is great to see an advancement of the corridor as Lilongwe bridge and subsequent roads were built with grant assistance from Japan. I am looking forward to an official handover ceremony of Lilongwe bridge soon.
I personally wish to make my effort to continue and strengthen its cooperation with Malawi so that the landmark of friendship symbolized by Lilongwe Bridge and other major projects make substantive impact to the economic development.
For this, I also wish to enhance trade and investment relations. I wish to share information on business opportunities of Malawi to many more Japanese companies including in the area of infrastructure, agriculture, mineral resources and social impact businesses and advance mutual benefit of our two countries.
In doing so, I will actively seek advice from people of Malawi while ensuring to make effective use of my experience and network in Africa in the past 35 years.
Finally, protection of safety of Japanese nationals is the priority responsibility of the Embassy and request relevant authorities for collaborations concerned. The Embassy will make appropriate advisory and actions and provide our consular services in a proactive manner.
