Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects

On Thursday, 13th November 2025, His Excellency Yoichi OYA, Ambassador of Japan to Malawi and Mr. John Banana Matewere, Team Leader Sustainable Cape Maclear, signed a grant contract amounting up to USD 131, 665 (approximately K226 million) for the Project for the Provision of Secondhand Vehicles for Waste Collection at Cape Maclear in Mangochi District provided under the Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects by the Government of Japan. Through this grant, two second-hand trucks will be provided from Japan to support waste collection and disposal in Cape Maclear.
 
This project is an important step towards environmental sustainability in Malawi, especially in Cape Maclear, for safeguarding the future livelihoods of the children of the area.
 
Speaking during the ceremony, Ambassador Oya advocated for the local community-based organization, Sustainable Cape Maclear, residents and all stakeholders, to work together to make this project successful. 
 
In concluding his remarks, the Ambassador reiterated the Japanese Government’s commitment to support the development of Malawi.
 
The Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects is a Japanese Government grant aid scheme introduced in 1989.The aim of the GGP is to provide financial assistance to non-profit development organization and local government institutions for implementing projects at grassroots level. The GGP funding is a gift from the ordinary Japanese citizen to assist fellow global citizens in need.
