Japanese Ambassador's 4th Judo Championships

On July 22, 2017, Ambassador Yanagisawa presided over the 4th Japanese Ambassador’s Judo Championships, organized by the Embassy of Japan in collaboration with the Judo Association of Malawi. The Embassy of Japan is glad to see that this Ambassador's Judo Championships have been held annually since 2014. 25 athletes from not only Lilongwe but also Mzuzu and Blantyre competed each other, and enjoyed the occasion where they could show the results of their everyday practice.
In her speech, Ambassador Yanagisawa cited a participation of Malawian junior athletes in the African Union Zone 5 Youth Games held in Angola in 2016, and their consequent attainment of two bronze medals at both individual and team level as a very positive development. She also expressed hope that there would be Malawian Judo athletes participating in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The event was graced by Mrs Violet Chimkono, Vice Chairperson of the Malawi National Council of Sports, as a guest of honour. Representatives from Malawi Olympic Committe and Ministry of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development also witnessed this event together with an audience.
