On June 25, 2016, Ambassador Nishioka presided over the 3rd Japanese Ambassador’s Judo Championships, organized by the Embassy of Japan in collaboration with the Judo Association of Malawi. This was the first time in which judo athletes from Mzuzu and Blantyre joined the athletes from Lilongwe to compete together, showing that the sport is growing in Malawi. Over 50 judo athletes participated in the event.
In his speech, Ambassador Nishioka mentioned that the level of the Judo players have imporved significantly year after year, and that Judo has been developing as a sport in Malawi. He also wished that Malawi will be able to send Judo athletes to this year's Rio Olympics, as well as the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020. The event was graced by Honourable Grace Obama Chiumia, Minister of Sports and Culture, and was attended by many sports officials and school children.
