Emperor's Birthday Reception

November 16, 2017

On November 16, 2017, the Embassy of Japan celebrated the 84th Birthday of His Majesty Emperor Akihito of Japan at the Ambassador's Residence. In her remarks, Ambassador Yanagisawa said Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress have always supported strong friendship between Japan and Africa, and she wished more solid and peaceful bilateral relationship that can closely work for global peace and security. The Ambassador also mentioned that Japan's focus in development cooperation is to support locally driven development agenda and initiatives, and Japan will continue its support to promote self reliance of the people in Malawi. In addition to government-to-government relations, she also welcomed expanding partnerships between the two countries at company, NGO, and people-to-people levels.

The event was graced by the Guest of Honour, Hon. Dr. Emmanuel Fabiano, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and attended by many guests including cabinet ministers, speaker of the national assembly, government officials, heads of diplomatic missions, and leaders of private sector companies. The event was spiced with singing by an a cappella group comprising JICA volunteers and local Malawian Judo players who eloquently sung the national anthems of both countries in Japanese and Chichewa. Guests enjoyed Japanese dishes such as sushi, tempura and yakitori.
