On Thursday, 21st April 2016, His Excellency Shuichiro Nishioka, Ambassador of Japan to Malawi, handed over dredging equipment to the Government of Malawi under the “Forestry Preservation Programme” at Nkula Power Station. The occasion was presided by Honourable Bright Msaka SC, Minister of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining and Mrs. Jean Mathanga, a chairperson of Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM).

The Government of Japan provided a grant amounting 1.7 billion Japanese Yen (equivalent $15.7 million at present value) to assist Malawi to address the issue of deforestation and improve the power generation. The beneficiaries of this grant are the Department of Forestry, Department of Energy and Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM). Previously, the grant supported the development of data for Forest Reserves providing the first ever Forest Resource Mapping for the country and procurement of a fleet of Trucks, Graders, Water tankers, Forklifts, Lorrie’s and motorcycles for the Department of Forestry. The grant also supported the Department of Energy with Grid line equipment and transformers for the rural electrification programme. This time, Japan provided a fund for dredging equipment which is estimated at 490 million Japanese Yen (about US$4.54 million at present value).

Hon. Msaka expressed gratitude from the people of Malawi to the people of Japan for the kind support for this project as well as the grant aid for the rehabilitation of Tedzani power station. Mrs. Mathanga also appreciated for the timely support by the Government of Japan to improve the power generation capacity.
