Japan’s Humanitarian Assistance through WFP Malawi
March 16, 2016
Japan provided WFP with a US$ 5 million grant under the 2015 Japanese Government supplementary budget. The grant strengthens WFP food relief, recovery and resilience operations (FFA: Food for Asset) in the areas affected by the 2015 floods and dry-spells that led to reduced food production across the country.
On Wednesday, 16th March 2016, His Excellency Shuichiro Nishioka, Ambassador of Japan to Malawi visited Balaka District to observe the ongoing food distribution exercise and interacted with beneficiaries. He further observed integrated recovery and resilience projects which WFP are implementing together with its partners at the community level. Particularly, he visited irrigation, fish farming, borehole construction, compost making, weather index insurance, sanitation improvement activities and joined in tree planting exercise which the community are doing in conserving the environment.
Speaking during the visit, Ambassador Nishioka said Japan is keen on strengthening means of assisting vulnerable people affected by natural disasters. Other than observing implementation of activities funded by the government of Japan, the visit offered a good platform to pursue possible collaboration between Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and WFP in implementing recovery and resilience building activities.
