On Wednesday, February 24, 2016 His Excellency Shuichiro Nishioka, the Ambassador of Japan to Malawi, courted Honourable Goodall Gondwe, the Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development where he disclosed Japan’s commitment to provide US$7.3 million to the Government of Malawi in response to the humanitarian needs. The assistance follows His Excellency President Arthur Peter Mutharika’s call for support to complement government’s resources in assisting the food insecure households following the January 2015 floods and also the prolonged dry spell.
Japan will provide US$5 million through the World Food Programme (WFP). The grant will go towards WFP’s ongoing relief response that is reaching 2.4 million people across the country with life-saving food assistance. WFP will also use the grant to implement activities that will support transition from relief to recovery to help food insecure households recover and address underlying drivers of vulnerability. Portions of the contribution will also support WFP’s school meals programme and food assistance to refugees in Malawi. In addition to food assistance, Japan will provide US$2.3 million through UNICEF to support emergency response to malnutrition. The funds will support approximately 6, 000 children with severe acute malnutrition, deemed to be at risk of cholera as well as provide screening at village clinics for 360,000 children. These interventions will be implemented in 21 districts across the country.
For three consecutive years now, the Government of Japan has supported emergency response activities in Malawi. In 2014 and 2015, Japan provided US$2.1 million and US$2.5 million respectively for food assistance in Malawi.
