On Friday, 4th December 2015, Mr. Hisashi Nakatomi, Chargé d’affaires ad interim of the Embassy of Japan in Malawi handed over newly constructed laboratories for St. Anne’s Community Day Secondary School and Fulirwa Community Day Secondary School in the Project for Construction of Science and Biology Laboratories in Karonga District under the Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects.

In September 2015, the Government of Malawi introduced a new curriculum for secondary education, in which chemistry and physics will be taught in secondary schools including the Community Day Secondary Schools (CDSSs). However, the teaching and learning of science in Malawi is challenged due to lack of well-equipped science laboratories in most schools particularly CDSSs.

In order to assist government’s efforts of equipping schools with science teaching and learning materials, the Government of Japan provided a grant amounting to USD111, 321 (about MWK 45.8 million) through the Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects. Karonga Diocese was the grant recipient and used it to construct physics and biology laboratories for St Anne’s CDSS and Fulirwa CDSS in Chilumba of Karonga district. In addition, the grant also facilitated the procurement of science teaching equipment and school furniture for each of these schools.
