Japanese Grant Aid
Exchange of Notes Signing Ceremony
November 4, 2015
On 4th November 2015, His Excellency Shuichiro Nishioka, the Ambassador of Japan to Malawi and Honourable Goodall Gondwe, Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, signed the Exchange of Notes for the Project for Expansion of a Terminal Building at Kamuzu International Airport.
In the early 1980’s, the government of Japan supported the construction of a terminal building, control tower and also installation of a control system at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA). Later in 2010 and 2011, Japan supported the upgrading of the air navigation system as well as the installation of solar electricity system that produce clean and sustainable energy for the operation of the airport. However, the buildings are old and require major rehabilitation and maintenance. The operational space is congested and cannot effectively accommodate the current demand and certainly not the future.
In its quest for continued development of KIA, the Government of Japan approved a grant amounting to JPY3.7 billion (about USD30.4 million). The grant will facilitate the construction of a new terminal building, rehabilitation of the passenger terminal and baggage claim area. The grant will also facilitate the procurement and installation of equipment such as x-ray scanners, metal detectors and aircraft surveillance system.
Speaking during the event, Ambassador Nishioka said this grant compliments the grant agreement signed earlier in March, of about JPY5.8 billion (about USD47.9 million) for the Extension of Tedzani Electricity Hydropower Station in Malawi. This entails that this year alone, Japan has committed to provide about 9.6 billion Japanese Yen (about USD78.3 million) for the development of Malawi through the Japanese Grant Aid Scheme.
