On October 31, The Embassy of Japan in collaboration with the Kendo Association of Malawi hosted the Japanese Ambassador's Second Kendo Championships at the Blantyre Youth Center. The tournament was graced by the Guest of Honour, Mr. Joseph Mwandidya, Chief Director of the Ministry of Sports and Culture, and Councillor Joseph Makwinja from Blantyre City Council.
The tournament was divided in four categories: Junior Boys, Junior Girls, Advanced level, and an exhibition match between Malawi and Japan. Members of the Kendo Association displayed their skills and discipline, and Japanese volunteers helped organize the event as well as took part in the tournament. Last year, Malawi won the exhibition match between the two countries, but this year Japan won the match, which brought the match to a draw, increasing anticipation for next year's tournament.
In delivering his remarks during the Championships, Ambassador Nishioka congratulated the Kendo players for their outstanding skills and discipline. While noting the various challenges faced by the Kendo players, he commended their dedication to the sport which has encouraged the Embassy and other Japanese institutions to support Kendo in Malawi. On behalf of the All Japan Kendo Federation, Ambassador Nishioka handed over the list of Kendo equipment which will be donated to the Kendo Association of Malawi. In addition, the Ambassador extended gratitude to the Government of Malawi for its support to Kendo and appealed for continued support.
Furthermore, Ambassador Nishioka particularly expressed joy at the level of unity between the Japanese and Malawian players in promoting the sport saying that the event is a celebration of the friendship between the two countries, especially at the grass-roots level, as Kendo was originaly introduced to Malawi through a Japanese volunteer.
