Grant Assistance for Cultural Grassroots Projects
Grant Contract Signing Ceremony
10th February, 2015
On Tuesday, 10th February 2015, His Excellency Shuichiro Nishioka, the Ambassador of Japan to Malawi and Mr Oscar Kanjala President of the Malawi Olympic Committee signed a grant contract for the Project for Facility Development of the Malawi Olympic Committee. The grant signed amounting to US$97, 252 is provided under the Grant Assistance for Cultural Grassroots Project Scheme. Last year, the Embassy of Japan introduced this new Scheme of Grant Assistance for Cultural Grassroots Projects to Malawi to specifically support the local Government and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) that are promoting sports and culture in the country. Also the Japanese language education and higher education related projects will benefit from the scheme
The grant provided from the Government of Japan will facilitate the construction of accommodation for athletes or trainees in Malawi. It is therefore expected that after project completion, the committee will no longer have to spend money for the athlete’s accommodation but rather use it for other developing activities. It is also envisaged through the project, athletes who will be nominated to compete internationally will increase and more athletes will be able to join the 2020 Tokyo Olympic. The function was held at the Embassy of Japan conference room and graced by Honorable Grace Obama Chiumia, M.P., Minister of Youth and Sports Development.
