His Excellency Shuichiro Nishioka visits
1st March, 2015
Beginning of January this year, Malawi experienced torrential rains which have affected 15 districts and displaced thousands of people, caused damage to property and loss of lives, livestock and farm land. As part of its humanitarian assistance, the Government of Japan through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) immediately provided emergency relief items worth JY¥19 million (approx. about US$158, 000). Following this, the Government of Japan pledged additional assistance worth US$2.5 million to respond to the growing needs for emergency food distribution through the World Food Programme (WFP).
About US$1.8 million will be used to provide life-saving food assistance to support the 322,200 most vulnerable people who have been rendered food insecure by the floods. Another US$500,000 will help WFP assist 20,900 people in the hardest-hit districts with a tailored early recovery programme to begin rebuilding their livelihoods. The remaining US$200,000 will enable WFP to continue providing school meals to 42,000 school children in flood-affected areas.
Following this pledge, on 1st March 2015, his Excellency Shuichiro Nishioka, Ambassador of Japan to Malawi visited Nsanje and Chikwawa districts. He met with some of the flood victims who are now living in displacement camps. The visit was organized by World Food Programme.
