Heavy rains have caused flooding in Malawi since the beginning of January this year. This has resulted in the loss of lives and the displacement of tens of thousands of people who are now in the need of urgent humanitarian assistance. In response to this, on Wednesday, 28th January 2015, His Excellency Shuichiro Nishioka, the Ambassador of Japan to Malawi handed the emergency relief items to the government of Malawi through the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) for the victims of floods in Malawi.

The assistance worth 19 million Japanese yen (approx. 74 million Malawi kwacha) include 180 family tents, 900 Sleeping Pads, 500 Fleece Blankets, 400 Wool Blankets and 40 Plastic Sheets. The support was arranged through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and will be distributed to the beneficiaries by Unicef.

Speaking during the ceremony, His Excellency Shuichiro Nishioka said, the Government of Japan is seriously considering additional assistance, in particular, to respond to the growing needs for emergency food distribution through the World Food Programme (WFP) worth 2.5 million USD.

The function was attended by Mrs. Ivy Luhanga, Secretary for Land, Housing and Urban Development, Ms. Shupikai Nyirenda, Undersecretary for the Department of Disaster Management Affairs, Mr. Mahimbo Mdoe, Unicef Resident Representative and Mr. Kazuhiko Tokukashi, JICA Resident Representative.
