On Monday, 22nd September 2014, His Excellency Shuichiro Nishioka, the Ambassador of Japan to Malawi and Mr. Raphael Piringu, Mwanza District Health Officer signed a grant contract for the Project for the Improvement Facility of Mwanza District Hospital in Mwanza District. The grant signed amounting to US$41,816.00 provided under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects will facilitate the procurement of 5 water tanks, 4 solar systems, construction 1 septic tank and 8 pit latrines in order to improve provision of quality health services to the people of Mwanza District.
Mwanza District Hospital is one of the old hospitals established in 1981. The hospital is usually overwhelmed by patients from within Mwanza, Neno and even Mozambique. Despite the increased number of patients, the hospital faces various challenges including inadequate infrastructure to ensure continuous supply of basic resources like clean water and electricity. These make difficult to deliver essential health services in an effective manner.
Speaking during the ceremony, Ambassador Nishioka commended the Government of Malawi for its efforts to improve the health sector through the Essential Health Package (EHP), development of health service infrastructure and implementation of various health related programs. Japan adheres to its vision to prioritize global health in its foreign policy and plans to cooperate with Africa towards advancing universal health coverage through implementation of various health intitiatives and bilateral technical assistance.
